2012 Gerard Crock Lecture onlineJune 7, 2012
The 2012 Gerard Crock lecture was held on Wednesday 23 May at the Melbourne Graduate School of Education. This annual public lecture, hosted jointly by the Centre for Eye Research Australia (CERA) and the University of Melbourne, honours the memory and contribution to ophthalmology of Professor Gerard Crock AO (1929-2007).
Former CERA Managing Director Professor Tien Wong presented this year’s lecture, entitled, “The Eye is a Window to Your Health”.
“By taking an eye photograph of a patient, and using computer imaging software, we can detect very subtle changes in the eye blood vessels which are markers of early damage,” said Professor Wong. “This may potentially allow the prediction of cardiovascular disease years before it develops, allowing timely preventative action and treatment.”
Professor Wong is a multiple-award winning researcher with a focus on retinal vascular diseases. He is currently Director of the Singapore Eye Research Institute, and Professorial Fellow at the University of Melbourne and CERA.
Professor James Angus AO, Dean of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at the University of Melbourne, introduced the lecture and described Professor Wong as “one of the best and brightest of his generation in medical science and research.”
