The Anterior Segment Research Unit of CERA is a progressive and energetic team involved in the development of a bioengineered cornea. The primary focus of this position will be to;

  • Establish and optimise epithelial stem cell culture protocols
  • Perform in vitro and in vivo transfer study of epithelial stem cells

Techniques – Essential Experience

  • Cell Culture
  • Stem Cell Culture
  • Tissue Engineering
  • Immunohistochemistry

Along with outstanding organisational skills, you will have the ability to work autonomously. A relevant tertiary qualification coupled with an enthusiasm for research initiatives and delivering quality outcomes is essential.

Postdoctoral Fellows and PhD Candidates
 

The Centre for Eye Research Australia and the University of Melbourne Department of Ophthalmology jointly make up Australia’s leading ophthalmology research institute, based at the Eye & Ear Hospital in Melbourne.

Exciting opportunities exist for early career researchers to join one of our research units at a postdoctoral or PhD level in the following areas:
 

  • Ophthalmic Genetics
  • Neurodegeneration and Glaucoma
  • Biomechanics and Ocular Wound Healing
  • Disease Biomarkers
  • Retinal Epidemiology of Eye Disease Imaging
  • Visual Function in Age Related Macular Degeneration
  • Ophthalmology Health Services Delivery

Up to 3 Postdoctoral Fellowships are available. We offer full funding of salary and benefits for an initial 2-year period and initial establishment costs. Appointments will be made on a 12-months contract, renewable after 1 year based on performance. Applicants are expected to have completed all PhD requirements prior to arrival. We are looking for candidates with a strong commitment to building a research career, and an early track record that demonstrates potential to achieve self-funding through competitive fellowship and grant funding after 2 years. 

A number of PhD scholarships are also available, at a level comparable to competitive schemes. Institute-supported PhD scholarships are intended for the first year of study.  Applicants are expected to be eligible and competitive for University of Melbourne and national scholarships to fund subsequent years of PhD candidature.

The Prevention of Blindness Unit of CERA is a progressive and energetic team involved in a number of ongoing research projects. The primary focus of this position will be to:

  • Undertake research projects, including assisting in the design and implementation and management of the research projects, especially population-based surveys.
  • Manage and conduct field work within and outside Australia.
  • Analyse and interpret data and write reports for the Avoidable Blindness Initiative (ABI).
  • Assist in data analysis and preparation of reports for the National Trachoma Reporting and Surveillance Unit (NTRSU).
  • Prepare manuscripts for publication in collaboration with investigators.
  • Present results of research at local, national and international conferences.
  • Prepare competitive grant applications to external funding bodies to support research projects.
  • Prepare research reports as necessary to funding agencies, the University of Melbourne.
  • Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • Act as a reviewer for professional journals and grant applications.
  • Participate in professional organisations.
  • Provide administrative functions primarily connected with his/her area of research.
