CERA

Clinical trials

Take part in research

CERA is an international leader in eye research. Our world-class knowledge and expertise are used to discover better treatments, deliver faster diagnoses, and prevent eye disease.

We conduct clinical studies for a variety of eye conditions including diabetic eye disease, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, uveitis and retinal diseases, as well as less common eye diseases.

Clinical trials play a critical role in helping develop new treatments for eye disease, and ensuring they are safe, effective and make a difference for patients.

These trials can lead to breakthroughs in medical understanding, and better ways to help people keep their sight.

Our team is made up of more than 50 eye doctors, study coordinators, scientists and nurses. We are highly experienced, passionate about research, and devoted to patient care.

We collaborate with research organisations, universities, pharmaceutical companies and biotech enterprises from around the world.

We are based in Melbourne, and located at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital.

Trial location information

From Monday 4 March, all Eye and Ear clinical services, including the Eye and Ear on the Park Pharmacy, will be moving back to The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital located at 32 Gisborne Street, East Melbourne. Further information is on The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital website.

CERA’s Clinical Trials Research Centre will however continue to operate and see patients at Eye and Ear on the Park (2 St Andrews Place, East Melbourne) until works and certification of our own new clinical trials site on Level 7 of the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital are complete.

Clinical trial participants should continue to go to their appointment location as advised on their patient letter or by their clinical trial coordinator.

We’re very excited about the opening of our new state of the art clinical trials centre, a move will create an easily accessible environment for all our clinical trial patients.

Thank you for your patience whist we build this new space.

Get involved

For patients and participants

We need volunteers for our clinical trials, now and in the future. Most people who volunteer have an eye disease or disorder, or are likely to develop one.

Clinical trials vary from short ‘pilot’ or exploratory studies, through to phase I, II, III and IV trials. Trials can take place over a few months, or several years. Each phase of a clinical trial has different goals and methods.

If you’re interested in taking part in clinical trials at CERA, please read through the following information to understand the benefits and risks of participation.
