Our Work

Eye disease and vision loss present major – and growing – challenges in Australia and around the world for the people affected by them and the health and social systems helping them.

The Centre for Eye Research Australia (CERA) is a vibrant institute working at the cutting edge of ophthalmic research. Its mission is to eliminate the major eye diseases that cause vision loss and blindness and reduce their impact in our community.

CERA together with the University of Melbourne Department of Ophthalmology makes up Australia’s leading eye research group, internationally renowned for its research into the causes, diagnosis, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of eye diseases, vision loss and blindness.

Through formal affiliation with the University of Melbourne and strong links to the College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) CERA contributes to clinical teaching and research training for the next generation of eye specialists.

CERA and the University Department enjoy a close working relationship with the Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital where we are located. This setting provides an integrated environment for translational clinical research that makes a practical difference to patients’ lives.
