A Memorial Gift for Eye Research

A memorial donation is a gift to honour the memory of someone you care about who is deceased.

The Eye Research Australia Foundation welcomes memorial gifts and is pleased to help you commemorate a special person you were close to – a partner, family member, friend or respected colleague. Through a memorial donation you can ensure their legacy lives on and benefits others by supporting research towards the elimination of vision loss and blindness. Your valued support will go towards advancing research at the Centre for Eye Research Australia.

More than half a million Australians are currently affected by vision loss or blindness. The major eye diseases that lead to vision loss are strongly related to aging. As our population ages, many of us will have friends and relatives who suffer vision loss in their later years, or we will be affected ourselves. The Centre for Eye Research Australia works towards better ways of preventing, diagnosing and treating eye conditions. It offers eye health education and support for people living with low vision.

How does a Memorial Gift differ from other donations?

• Memorial gifts are most commonly made shortly after the death of a person.
• Some families choose to request donations in lieu of flowers at a funeral. Memorial gifts can be encouraged in funeral notices or obituary listings through a simple form of words, for example: The family of ……………… requests donations to the Eye Research Australia Foundation in lieu of flowers.
• If you intend to encourage donations to the Eye Research Australia Foundation in memory of a loved one, we would appreciate your advance notice. We will be pleased to provide donation envelopes for distribution at the service.
• A sympathy card will be sent to the next of kin to notify them of your gift. We will not disclose the amount of your donation. Please advise us if you wish to remain anonymous. For all donations over $2 a tax receipt will be posted to the donor’s mailing address.
• Some donors make annual memorial gifts on the anniversary of the death or birthday of the deceased person they wish to commemorate. We will be pleased to assist you establish a regular giving cycle.
• Occasionally, beneficiaries of an estate will donate part of the inheritance they have received in memory of the deceased benefactor.
• For significant gifts, the name of the person you wish to honour may be associated in perpetuity with a program your gift supports, for instance a scholarship, a travel award or a facility. Naming rights are negotiated on a case-by-case basis.
