Professor Mark Daniell is the Head of the Corneal Unit at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital and Head of the Surgical Research Unit at CERA. He is a Professor at CERA and the University of Melbourne.

Associate Professor Elaine Chong is a Senior Research Fellow at CERA, the head of ophthalmology at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, and a consultant ophthalmologist at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital (RVEEH).

Dr Srujana Sahebjada is a Research Optometrist and Senior Research Fellow at CERA. She is also the Project Manager of the Keratoconus International Consortium.

Professor Paul Baird is a molecular geneticist and NHMRC Senior Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne.

Dr Vishal Jhanji is a Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He is a corneal specialist and a clinician scientist by training.

In keratoconus, the cornea (the front window of the eye) gets thinner over time. As a result, the round shape of the cornea gets distorted and a cone-like shape develops.

Our corneal research team strives to improve all aspects of corneal transplantation, and develop better treatments for conditions such as Fuchs’ endothelial dystrophy and keratoconus.

The Keratoconus International Consortium (KIC) is a worldwide collaboration led by the Centre for Eye Research Australia. It brings together over 40 corneal research groups around the world.

The Australian Study of Keratoconus (ASK) is one of CERA’s major corneal research projects, and one of the world’s largest projects on keratoconus.
