BOrth (Hons), PhD

Dr Stuart Keel is a Principal Investigator at CERA with a focus on clinical and epidemiological research.

He completed his PhD at La Trobe University in 2015, where he investigated retinal microvascular biomarkers in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes.

Following this, Dr Keel joined CERA, where he co-managed the first National Eye Health Survey – a population-based study into the prevalence and causes of vision impairment and blindness in non-Indigenous and Indigenous Australians.

Dr Keel has recently been on secondment to the World Health Organization in Geneva where he has made major contributions to the first World Report on Blindness and global eye health policy development.

In 2019 he was awarded an Emerging Leader Fellowship from the National Health and Medical Research Council. With this support he will continue his focus on diabetic eye disease, with the goal of improving the uptake of regular eye screening by Australians with diabetes.
