About us
Our story
Vision is precious and no-one should ever lose the gift of sight.
The Centre for Eye Research Australia is an independent Medical Research Institute, proudly affiliated with the University of Melbourne and the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital.
Our teams are based in discovery research labs, including a state-of the-art genetic engineering hub in East Melbourne and in clinical research spaces in the nearby Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital.
We are deeply committed to conducting eye research with real-life impact and finding ways to prevent people from going blind.
As an international leader in eye research – ranking in the world’s top 5 for ophthalmology research – we use our world-class knowledge and expertise to achieve better treatments and faster diagnosis of eye disease.
Our goal is to prevent vision loss – and ultimately, find cures to restore sight. As true innovators our scientists are on the brink of new discoveries every day.
With the support of our many partners, funders and philanthropic supporters, we can continue this world-leading research and accomplish scientific breakthroughs previously deemed unachievable.
Our aim is to offer hope to people affected by vision loss and protect the sight of everyone in need.
With CERA, there’s hope in sight.
Our vision
A world free from vision loss and blindness.
A world free from vision loss and blindness.
Our mission
We work to eliminate the major eye diseases that cause vision loss and blindness and to reduce their impact on people’s lives.

Impact through innovation: CERA Strategy 2025-2030
CERA’s mission is to lead the way in transforming the future of eye health and vision.
Our strategy have five key strategic priorities:
- Early identification of eye disease through clinical registries.
- Mapping disease progression to enable early intervention.
- Development and testing of novel therapies.
- Access to clinical trials for new diagnostics and treatments.
- Improved patient outcomes and quality of life.
CERA will concentrate on four major eye diseases: glaucoma, inherited retinal diseases, macular degeneration, and diabetic eye diseases, while also supporting emerging areas like ocular oncology.
Our vision for the next five years is centered around partnering for impact to accelerate research and bring transformative solutions to more people.

Our commitment to sustainability
We accept that climate change is an issue of national and global concern.
There is an urgent need for decisive, rapid, and sustained transition to a low carbon economy for containing global heating and climate change.
We aim to progressively reduce our carbon footprint, working towards a goal of complete removal over the longer term.
