Dr Xianwen Shang
Research Fellow, Ophthalmic Epidemiology
Dr Xianwen Shang is a Research Fellow and statistician who offers internal statistical support to CERA’s Ophthalmic Epidemiology team and World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for the Prevention of Blindness at CERA.
Dr Shang is experienced in statistics and big data analysis. He has been involved in the 45 and Up Study, Dubai Eye Survey and other research projects. He has applied machine learning methods to identify leading predictors of cataract surgery, glaucoma, diabetes, multimorbidity and healthy ageing.
He has also used Medication-Wide Association Study methods to identify medications that had great contribution to the development of cataract surgery, Diabetic Retinopathy Progression, and glaucoma.
Key research questions
- Is vision impairment associated with frailty, cognitive decline, and dementia?
- Is vision impairment a mediator or moderator in the relationship between lifestyle factors and Magnetic Resonance Imaging Measures?
- Is vision impairment a mediator or moderator in the relationship between lifestyle factors and dementia?
- Are lifestyle factors and metabolites associated with Magnetic Resonance Imaging Measures and dementia?
