Dr Zachary Tan is a medical practitioner with educational background in ophthalmology, healthcare leadership and experience in digital health. He was previously the Bloomberg Fellow at Schwarzman Scholars.

He is a Senior Research Fellow at CERA, working in our World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for the Prevention of Blindness to develop, engage and lead high quality research projects.

Dr Tan is primarily involved with research aimed at identifying early eye disease through the integration of retinal photography and artificial intelligence. He has a particular interest in translational applications of artificial intelligence and novel screening models that improve access to eye disease care.

  • How can we develop artificial intelligence tools that are more accurate and reliable for eye disease diagnosis?
  • How do we use artificial intelligence tools to improve patient access to eye disease care, including in rural and indigenous Australian settings?
  • How do we use artificial intelligence tools to better predict systemic disease risk using findings from the eye?
