Learn more about our inherited retinal disease research

As an international leader in vision research, we are committed to research with real-life impact. Here’s how our scientists are working to advance our knowledge of IRDs and develop potential new treatments.

Understanding IRDs

Here we’ve gathered some essential information about a few common inherited retinal diseases.

Inherited retinal diseases

Inherited retinal diseases are a broad group of genetic eye conditions that cause vision loss and sometimes, legal blindness.

Retinitis pigmentosa

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is the name of a group of genetic or inherited diseases that affect the retina. It leads to loss of night and side vision.

Stargardt’s disease

Stargardt’s disease is a type of inherited retinal disease that leads to a loss of central vision.

Cone-rod dystrophy (CORD)

Cone-rod dystrophy is a group of genetic or inherited eye diseases that affect the retina and cause vision loss.

Usher syndrome (USH)

Usher syndrome is a rare genetic condition that affects vision, hearing and sometimes balance.

Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA) and early-onset severe retinal dystrophy (EOSRD)

Leber congenital amaurosis and early-onset severe retinal dystrophy are rare genetic eye conditions causing poor vision in young children.

Our research

Learn more about some of the different areas our world-class researchers work across to advance our understanding of IRDs and develop new treatments.

Inherited retinal disease research

From gene and cell therapies to the bionic eye, our scientists work across a number of research areas to advance our knowledge of IRDs and develop potential treatments.

Gene therapy research

CERA is leading world-first research into gene therapies that could halt or even reverse vision loss in patients with inherited retinal diseases.

Cellular reprogramming research

Our researchers use cell reprogramming and stem cell technologies to better understand and develop treatments for eye diseases, with the goal of regenerating cells in the retina.

Clinical genetics research

Our team is devoted to understanding the molecular mechanisms of blinding eye diseases.

Bionic eye research

Our world-leading projects strive to help patients with end-stage inherited retinal disease navigate the world.

Get involved

To advance our understanding of vision loss and find better treatments, clinical research is essential – and the patients who participate play a vital role.
